ABOUT THE BOOK
Orlando has always been an outsider…
His longing for passion, adventure and fulfilment takes him out of his own time. Chasing a dream through the centuries, he bounds from Elizabethan England and imperial Turkey to the modern world. Will he find happiness with the exotic Russian Princess Sasha? Or is the dashing explorer Shelmerdine the ideal man? And what form will Orlando take on the journey – a nobleman, traveller, writer? Man or… woman?
A wry commentary on gender and history, Orlando is also, in Woolf’s own words, a light-hearted ‘writer’s holiday’ which delights in ambiguity and capriciousness.

Channel Islands LGBTQ+ Writing Competition 2025 – CLOSING DATE
12:00am - 11:55am
30
Apr
Fancy winning a £100 voucher of your choice? Now’s your chance with the Channel Islands LGBTQ+ Writing Competition 2025.
In its fifth year, it is free to enter and you do not have to be LGBTQ+ to participate.
Anybody who was born in, lives in, or has lived in the Channel Islands can submit one entry of up to 1,000 words with an LGBTQ+ theme.
Entries are submitted into one of two categories: ‘Under 18s’ and ‘18 and Over.’ An independent panel of judges will anonymously decide a winner for each category. Each winner will be awarded with a £100 voucher, and the Pippa McCathie memorial trophy will be awarded for the third year.
As a first this year entrants are able to request where the voucher is for, and are encouraged to support local Channel Islands small businesses where possible. They could even choose to donate a voucher of their choice to another locally registered charity that they would like to support.
Winners will be announced on Thursday 22 May at an awards ceremony at Guille-Alles Library, which is open to the public with online attendance possible.
“The competition is there to educate and inform people on what it’s like to be LGBTQ+ in the Channel Islands today, and it gives local aspiring writers a chance to get their work out there. So the more the merrier!”
All entries must be submitted by Wednesday 30 April via this link: https://forms.gle/GyM6q52bev5s4pr29, which can also be accessed at: linktr.ee/liberategsy. Full Terms and Conditions apply, available via the entry form. Anybody unable to use the form can email hello@liberate.gg.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Their greatest act of resistance was simply existing
In 1950s New York, a group of drag pioneers found work in a small number of Lower East Side clubs. They occupied the margins of society, determined to live authentically, despite the attentions of the police. These girls were unstoppable, fearless and fabulous, but their very existence was deemed a criminal threat to society.
When a secret cache of their letters was discovered in 2014, these individuals were given a voice for the first time. The letters reveal personal triumphs and tragedies, and a fascinating world that has rarely been documented.
Expertly weaving social, political and cultural history, Craig Olsen illuminates the lives and loves of our exceptional LGBTQ+ forebears.
P.S. Burn This Letter Please is the ground-breaking result: a deeply moving encounter with a generation of survivors, and a necessary account of how modern drag culture was born.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Born under different stars, Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in a hyper-masculine world. They are caught between two of Glasgow’s housing estates, where young working-class men divide themselves along sectarian lines, and fight territorial battles for the sake of reputation. They should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all, and yet they become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the doocot that James has built for his prize racing pigeons. As they begin to fall in love, they dream of escaping the grey city, and Mungo must work hard to hide his true self from all those around him, especially from his elder brother Hamish, a local gang leader with a brutal reputation to uphold.
But the threat of discovery is constant and the punishment unspeakable. When Mungo’s mother sends him on a fishing trip to a loch in western Scotland with two strange men behind whose drunken banter lie murky pasts, he needs to summon all his inner strength and courage to get back to a place of safety, a place where he and James might still have a future.
Imbuing the everyday world of its characters with rich lyricism, Douglas Stuart’s Young Mungo is a gripping and revealing story about the meaning of masculinity, the push and pull of family, the violence faced by so many queer people, and the dangers of loving someone too much.

Years later, when a charismatic pair of off-world gladiators show up on her doorstep, she finds that life may not be as small as she thought. ABOUT THE BOOK
I stand at the window of this great house in the south of France as night falls, the night which is leading me to the most terrible morning of my life.
Considered an ‘audacious’ second novel, Giovanni’s Room is set in the 1950s Paris of American expatriates, liaisons, and violence. This now-classic story of a fated love triangle explores, with uncompromising clarity, the conflicts between desire, conventional morality and sexual identity.
One of the most important American writers of the twentieth century, James Baldwin’s novels primarily address issues of race, class and sexual inequality, including Giovanni’s Room which was extremely controversial in its representation of gay relationships.
