Have you ever fancied being a writer? Now’s your chance! Liberate are very excited to be hosting a LGBTQ+ Writing Competition during LGBT History month! This competition aims to educate and inform the public about the challenges of being LBGTQ today.
The inspiration for the competition came from one of the Liberate volunteers after they read the book entitled ‘The Lie’ by William Dameron, a US based publicist. In it he described living a heteronormative life whilst hiding his homosexuality until he could hold it no longer.Liberate CEO Ellie Jones told us ‘The Lie really struck a chord with lots of members of the Liberate team and we thought it would be wonderful to hear more about peoples experiences of being LGBTQ+. William is also one of the judges for the competition.
You don’t have to identify as LBGTQ+ but your entry has to reflect the theme. The aim of the competition is to inform and educate people of the challenges of being LBGTQ+ today using the medium of creative writing to express themselves.’The competition is sponsored by Imperium Trust, Director Rhona Humphries told us why they wanted to get involved ‘We were made aware of Liberate and the writing competition through our existing charitable support of Caritas, Liberate provide a great platform for the LGBTQ+ community and the writing competition initiative is another excellent platform for our integrated island community.’
If you would like to enter the competition the rules are pretty simple. Liberate are asking you to ‘express yourself with a piece you’ve written with a LGBTQ+ story line in 1000 words or less’. Entries are open to everyone across the Channel Islands. There are two categories; an over 18’s and under 18’s so everybody can have a go… with a £100 amazon voucher prize for the winner of both categories!
Closing date is 31st March 2021.
