Guernsey promises to bring a splash of colour to celebrate Channel Islands Pride this year by hosting ‘Pride at the Princess Royal’, kindly sponsored by Mourant. While Jersey will be carrying the official flag this year, those who cannot be there, will be able to join the fun at an action-packed event at Les Ozouet.
Liberate, the islands LGBTQ+ charity, invites islanders to a free fun packed day suitable for all ages. You’ll find the rare sight of unicorns racing, a ‘cloud of colour’, Princesses telling stories and you’ll even be able to encase yourself in a bubble. All of the activities are free and they also include making your own Pride t-shirt with the Youth Commission’s spray paint t-shirt stall, or you can jump around on their giant bouncy castle, maybe you’ll have your face painted with Joni, or help Iris and Dora make a giant throne fit for a Queen! All this along with a live broadcast of the main Channel Islands Pride stage in Jersey.
The Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts will host the big screen action from Jersey and its bar will be open for the event. A quiet sensory room is also hoping to be created on site for the day, making the most of the studio rooms the centre offers. Come the evening the Performing Arts theatre will continue showing the main stage at CI Pride in Jersey. Once the festivities end in our sister island, we will continue into the evening with special Pride club night where you can dance the evening away to a special Pride playlist from a top UK LGBTQ+ DJ.
Liberate CEO Ellie Jones said:
“Channel Islands Pride is a great way to bring the islands together and so many take the opportunity to visit our sister islands while a Pride Parade is taking place. We know that travelling off island for some, may be difficult this year, so wanted to both screen the Jersey event and have a celebration of our own.
Pride events continue to be a great opportunity for those in the LGBTQ+ community to experience an atmosphere of strength of belonging. There is also the resonance of the tremendous work and commitment throughout history that has enabled a day like this to happen here and the continuing work globally, to represent and give rights to those who often live in fear.”
Mourant, a law firm-led professional services business, are the main sponsors of ‘Pride at the Princess Royal’ and Mourant Guernsey Managing Partner, John Lewis, told us why they are so excited to be supporting this event.
“We’re thrilled to be supporting CI Pride for the second consecutive year and sponsoring this fantastic community event in Guernsey for those unable to travel to Jersey for the Pride Parade. ‘Pride at the Princess Royal’ promises to be a fun and colourful event with both indoor and outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy.
“We’re looking forward to being part of the day’s activities including racing our very own Team Mourant unicorn in the Liberate Guernsey’s inaugural ‘Unicorn Race’. Pride aligns itself with many of our own core values and ‘Pride at the Princess Royal’ is a wonderful opportunity to bring people across Guernsey together to openly celebrate inclusion and our island’s diverse community.”
The event takes place on Saturday 21st August, from 1pm, and includes both indoor and outdoor activities including the ‘Cloud of Colour’ sponsored by KMPG, where bags of brightly coloured powered will be thrown into the air.
