Have you ever fancied being a writer? Now is your chance! Liberate are very excited to announce the second annual LGBTQ+ Writing Competition, with the winners being announced to coincide with this years Channel Islands Pride celebrations!
We are launching the competition during global Pride Month (June). This year sees the LGBTQ+ community celebrate 50 years since the first ‘Pride’ protests in the UK asking for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people. To reflect this we are asking people to write with a theme of ’50 years of Pride’. This could be fact or fiction, based on Pride or how much has changed in society in those 50 years, or any other related topic you can think of.
The closing date of the competition is Sunday 28th of August and an awards night will be held in Guernsey on the evening of Wednesday 7th of September during Channel iSlands Pride week (there will be an option for people join the awards night online for people not based in Guernsey).
The aim is to educate and inform the public about the triumphs and challenges that LBGTQ+ people face – past, present and future.
If you would like to enter the competition the rules are pretty simple. Write a piece with no more than 1,000 words with an LGBTQ+ theme. Entries are open to everyone across the Channel Islands. There are two categories; an over 18’s and under 18’s so everybody can have a go, with a £100 Amazon voucher prize for the winner of both categories!
The inspiration for the competition came from one of the Liberate volunteers after they read the book entitled ‘The Lie’ by William Dameron, a US based publicist. In it he described living a heteronormative life whilst hiding his homosexuality until he could hold it no longer. The Lie really struck a cord with lots of members of the Liberate team and we thought it would be wonderful to hear more about peoples experiences of being LGBTQ+. William is also one of the judges for the competition.

- When writing your entry, please be sure to change any names in your story to maintain full confidentiality (This also applies to your own name).
- All entries are to be submitted digitally to us using the google form linked in the button above.
- All entries are to be submitted by Sunday 28th of August 2022
- Winners will be announced on Wednesday 7th of September 2022
- Selected entries will be published on the Liberate website unless opted out.
- Adult language is permitted provided it isn’t too explicit.
- Liberate hold the right to decline accepting any entry deemed inappropriate.
