Currently, Guernsey’s adoption laws do not extend the same facilities to gay, lesbian and unmarried couples as they do to heterosexual married couples. Those laws are over 50 years old, and a proposal for change is being put before the States of Guernsey this month.

If successful, the laws will be updated so that a same sex or unmarried couple can adopt as a couple. At the moment, although people in a same sex or unmarried relationship can adopt, only one of them can be named as the legal parent.
