Thursday 27 November 2014 sees the launch of the first ever Rainbow Mufti Day in support of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Community (LGBTQ) across the Channel Islands. It’s aim is to brighten up winter but also give islanders a chance to demonstrate their support for equality by wearing something colourful.
We are holding the event to raise awareness about the issues facing LGBTQ citizens across both the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey, as well as fundraising for the support services we provide and educational initiatives to challenge discrimination and prejudice in our society.
“The rainbow flag carries significant meaning for the LGBTQ community. Each colour represents a specific theme. Rainbows are also a symbol of hope and it is our express hope that one day we will have a Fair and Equal Society, in which everyone will be treated equally, no matter what their gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race or disability” said Liberate Chair Martin Gavet.
“We hope that businesses, hospitals, schools, and government departments across the islands will fly the rainbow flag on the day to show their support of the LGBTQ community and in a stance against prejudice in all its forms. We may have a long way to go in reforming laws and policies to ensure that the islands are non-discriminatory, but flying the flag will be symbolic of that commitment towards equality”, he said.
