The Houses of Parliament will be lit up in rainbow colours, to celebrate Pride, the culmination of which is the London Pride parade today 8th July. Approval was given by the Speakers of the Commons and Lords, both of whom are strong supporters of LGBT rights.
Lord Fowler, Speaker of the House of Lords said: “One of the most urgent issues today is the stigma and discrimination that affects gay men and women. The situation has improved in Britain over the past few years, though few would say that all hostility has been overcome. But in many other countries the situation is far worse.”
Parliament has also for the first time organised special ‘Pride at Parliament’ tours, marking 50 years since the passing of the Sexual Offences Act 1967 and 60 years since the presentation of the Wolfenden Report in 1957.
